A New Year Is Coming

Are you ready? Are you going to end up better off financially by the end of 2019 or will you be exactly where you are today? Will you have more or less time to do the things you love? These are two great questions and if you are not asking yourself these, I ask, why not?

You might be saying to yourself, I don’t care that much about money, or I like to work, I’m doing pretty well already. You might be, but are you being honest with yourself. I used to have an expression I said often to my kids when I could tell they were not being honest. I would tell them to go to their bathroom, look at themselves in the mirror, if they can convince that person than come back and convince me.

The number one obstacle you face is you. You can have anything you want in life if you just do the right things enough times and just as importantly stop wasting your time on things that don’t bring results.

It wasn’t too long ago my financial life came crashing down all around me. I was almost two million in debt and could no longer convince myself to get out of bed in the morning. My business had taken over my life and I lost my will to press on. I wasn’t suicidal or anything like that, although I was trying to drown the feelings with scotch on an almost nightly basis which wasn’t making things any better. I was burned out and I knew I had brought it on myself.

I was in the worst place any entrepreneur can be in. You never ever want to allow yourself to get to this place. But I can tell you that you are heading there if you don’t change direction.

The place I refer to is the place where you lose your passion. You completely lose your drive to do it over and over again. The will to win goes away. The desire to please every customer is gone and you move to survival mode.

You may not think this can ever happen to you, it can. It does. It happens all the time to people who lose their direction. It never happens overnight, for me it took about 15 years. The great news is that it does not ever have to happen if you are willing to make some tweaks to your business and your life. You can stop it, but will you?

Only you can answer that but I can tell you that you can’t do it alone. You need some guidance, we all do. There’s an old expression, it’s hard to read the label from inside the jar. I’ll take that a step further, it’s hard to change the boat’s direction from the deck. You can’t fix your business if you are working for it instead of working on it. To fix it you have to step outside of it an view it as whole so you can see everything.
