What most people do when faced with financial challenges in their business is work harder, quote more jobs, borrow more money betting the future will be better than the present. But for most that rarely works.
- Working harder just produces a tired entrepreneur who isn’t thinking their best
- Quoting more jobs just brings more low priced, low margin work.
- Debt is one of the two things that will destroy any business.
And what happens if you don’t do anything? If you just keep on keeping on? Your debt will grow, your stress will become unbearable and eventually, you will be out of money, out of time and you will have to file bankruptcy. The worst part is telling your wife and kids that you have lost everything. Your life from that day forward will be forever changed. You do realize this happens to 90% of all entrepreneurs, right?
How I found the solution twice, by accident (and now I do it on purpose).
I’m no marketing genius by any stretch of the word. In 1992 I purchased a locksmith business, which had almost no advertising. I put up a two-sided 3′ x 5′ sign and business started pouring in the door. In just a few years I owned one of the largest most profitable locksmith businesses in the city. What was on the sign is what mattered. I sold that business for a huge profit in 1998.
In 2005 I owned an electrical products manufacturing company. I needed distributors to sell our products to end users. The products were highly technical so I needed people who were very good at sales to sell our products.
One fateful week a competitor alleged that we knocked off one of their products which was a complete and total lie. It pissed me off and our electrical engineers who did much of the design work. The worst part was this company was a total scam. I was so pissed off that I couldn’t sleep. I stayed up all night writing about how scams in the industry exist and how to recognize the companies who were scammers. That book was downloaded over 30,000 times in the next 6 years by my target prospects. Distributors who wanted to sell high margin electrical products but didn’t want to get scammed. I had more leads than I could handle, over 400 prequalified leads coming in each and every month. That book generated about 60 million in sales in those 6 years.
What I found out, twice by accident, is that if you have the right message, in front of the right audience, at the right time, you will get the right result. You will have lots of new customers. This is how I was introduced to lead magnets and how to use them to attract your ideal customers. When you attract customers instead of chasing them, they buy from you instead of you having to sell to them based upon price. Everyone wants to buy, no one wants to be sold.
And it doesn’t just work for me.
