What To Do When Corporate America Throws You Away

You devoted years of your life, you put your heart and soul into a company and one day you walk into the office, the manager calls you into her office and informs you your position has been eliminated.

Losing a job is never an easy thing especially when you feel deep in your soul that it was because your employer decided they could replace you with someone much younger and cheaper.

You’re scared, pissed off and not sure what’s the right move at this point.

I’ve felt this firsthand but from a bit of a different angle.

When I was 14 my dad came home from work one day and he was visibly destroyed.

I didn’t understand exactly what was going on at the time and my mom and dad were trying to be hushed about it but I could feel it.

My midwestern parents weren’t exactly known for their communication skills.

Most things like this seemed to be a family secret.

Dad was a banker and after 18 years with the Wisconsin Bankers Association, they had him train his replacement.

For me to say I know what you’re going through would be a lie however I can say unequivocally I know what you’re teen children are going through, if you have them.

This one event in my life changed my destiny forever and will likely change yours’ as well.

No one could possibly know what their destiny would have been but I know what my destiny had to become.

This event showed me as evident as it is today, that I did not want another person to have control of my destiny.

I wanted control of my destiny and finding that path over the past 34 years have been enormously challenging and even more rewarding.

Because of the impact that this event had in my life, I have been self-employed for the past 27 of those 34 years.

It’s also the reason that I will spend the rest of my life helping entrepreneurs to find the path to their dreams.

This path is not for the weak but this path is a certain path.

Far more certain than a college degree for the non-professional.

We need to stop telling our children to go to college, get a good job and work for 30 years and live happily ever after because unless little Johnny is going to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer or accountant, the path no longer holds any assurance and the path is laden with debt. Do we really want our children to start out 6 figures in debt?

But here’s the point where reading this might get a little tough.

I don’t care if your 50 or 65.

You can start over.

You must or you will spend the rest of your life licking your wounds being bitter for what could have been.

It’s time to get up, brush yourself off and move on.

If you are in your 50’s, 60’s or even your 70’s, you have more than enough time.

You and I don’t know how many years we have left but people who continue to work and have a career live far longer than people who retire young.

Why? Because people with a purpose have a reason to continue.

The first thing you need to do is find a purpose.

Something that will make you spring out of bed in the morning.

You may be able to find another job and you might need to start your own business.

I certainly have no way of knowing your skill level and the demand for your profession in the marketplace but I can tell you this, where there is demand there is an opportunity.

Look at your career and ask yourself these questions.

What are the major problems in my industry?

Then ask yourself if you can solve any of these problems.

If you can and your industry is vast, you my friend have a tremendous opportunity.

All good businesses are founded on solving a problem or making lives better.

Solving problems makes people’s lives better and people gladly part with their money when you do.

The biggest obstacle you face right now is you.

The voices in your head may be the only thing holding you back.

I know those voices all too well, everyone has them.

But if you are going to make a run at your dreams you are going to have to silence those voices.

No shrink, counselor or mentor can silence those voices, only you can.

And the only thing that is going to silence them is action.

You must take action if you are going to change your future or those voices will destroy you.

The most important thing for you to understand is that most of those voices, most of those thoughts, were put there by others but they can absolutely be changed by you.

The subconscious mind is where those voices derive.

If you want to change them, you have to reprogram your subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind the key to success and failure.

Positive thinking is not enough because if the underlying programming contains flaws, the results will be flawed.

When I say “flaws” what I mean is thoughts of failure, thoughts of despair, hopelessness and many other thoughts that hold us back.

You might be saying, I’m not perfect.

I’m not talking about being perfect, we all have flaws.

I am talking about the subconscious mind as a success seeking mechanism.

In his book Psycho-Cybernetics, Dr. Maxwell Maltz reveals that our subconscious mind is incapable of producing a result different than the internal programming.

If you believe you always fail, you always mess up, you always fall short, you never have success, that this is just the way you are, your success mechanism will provide the result of the programming.

The “failure” itself is the success of the subconscious mind.

It is producing the result it believes you want.

It can’t tell the difference between good and bad, it simply provides the result of the programming.

The good news is, you are the programmer and you can change the programming.

You can reprogram your mind to produce the exact result that you seek.

The question is, will you?

I have written extensively on this subject.

Every single course I teach, online or in person and every single person I coach, I spend an enormous amount of time on the reprogramming of the subconscious mind.

Why?

Because this is where all success begins.

Some people start with better programming than others.

Some children were told they can accomplish anything they set out to do and if they believe it, they do very well in life.

Others were told they will never amount to anything and if they believe it, they tend to fill our prisons.

Good or bad, those thoughts were put there by others and if your programming is limiting you, it’s time to change the programming to get you the result you seek.

Of course, I’m not a doctor and if you have deep-seated depression that is a different story, you should seek help from one.

The subconscious mind is like a guided missile.

A guided missile does not move straight at its target because the target is moving.

A guided missile is constantly adjusting to circumstances and the changes until it reaches the target.

The programming allows the missile to adjust as necessary to hit the moving target, the goal.

Change the programming (the target) and change your destiny.

Are you ready to make a change?

Will you?

As a business coach, I don’t typically work with startups because it tends to be too soon for them to really understand the value of over a quarter of a century of experience.
